Gross Anatomy

Carlos A. Suárez-Quian, Ph.D.
Emeritus Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology
Georgetown University School of Medicine

[Why]
Gross anatomy is the foundational science of medicine and allied health. Understanding all biological processes and all their variations begins with recognizing normal structures within the human body.

 [Organization]
Mastering human anatomy best occurs when organized into the six common areas taught in medicine and allied health fields: thorax, abdomen, pelvis and perineum, back and upper limb, lower limb, and head and neck.

[Content]
I’ve prepared the macroscopic anatomy of each region for you in comprehensive yet manageable lectures suitable for the scientific beginner, as well as experienced practitioners who seek an efficient review. In addition, I include brief, image-based cadaveric dissection summaries to prepare for the laboratory and/or to have a virtual experience. Over 100 imaged-based questions are available for users seeking mastery of the material via self-testing.

Dr. Suárez-Quian’s teaching expertise is in clinical gross anatomy; he served as gross anatomy discipline director of the first-year medical school curriculum for over 20 years. He received numerous teaching awards, including the Golden Apple and the Geza Illes Award in Gross Anatomy, and the Kaiser-Permanente Teaching Award granted by his faculty peers. In May 2008, Dr. Suárez-Quian was an early inductee into the MAGIS Society of Master Teachers, the highest award Georgetown bestows on a faculty member at the Medical School. He is the author of the Online Guided Gross Anatomy Dissector (Oxford University Press, 2014), an innovative, online tutorial to teach gross anatomy to medical and allied health students. He became co-author of The Clinical Anatomy of the Cranial Nerves, by J.A. Vilensky, W.M. Robertson and C.A. Suárez-Quian (Wiley, 2015). He published the eight-book series of All-in-One Anatomy Exam Review: Image-Based Questions and Answers with his co-author, Dr. Vilensky. He is also the co-author of Functional Anatomy For Occupational Therapy (Books of Discovery Press, 2022), now in over 140 programs nationwide.
