Answer to Ms. Irrelevant to the Rescue

Correct answer is A, the ileocolic. The single appendicular  artery is a branch of the ileocolic artery. If the appendicular artery is inadvertently cut during an appendectomy, a likely possibility given the expertise of the surgical team, it is possible to stop the blood supply to the appendix by pinching the ileocolic artery momentarily to then use a Bovie machine to control the bleeding. Pinching off a jejunal artery (line 4), would have no effect on stopping the bleeding of an injured appendectomy artery.

  1. = Ileocolic a.

  2. = Right colic a.

  3. = Middle branch

  4. = Jejunal branch

  5. = Continuation of superior mesenteric a.
