Ascites results from high pressure in certain veins of the liver, a condition known as portal hypertension.  The diseased liver makes lower amounts of a blood protein called albumin . Diseases that can cause severe liver damage can lead to ascites, the most common of which is cirrhosis of the liver. Yes, excessive drinking can lead to cirrhosis, but also, different types of liver cancers can also cause ascites. Sadly, ascites caused by cancer most often occur with advanced or recurrent cancer. Note: this liver is excessively green. The dissection demonstrated a completely blocked common bile duct. The gall bladder was devoid of any color.
